The triple-rotating wheellock

The so-called “triple-rotating wheellock” is a rare variant of the wheellock found in luxury guns (especially master pieces). Rather than having a single wheel for spanning and firing, this model presents two separate wheels connected by spur gears. The mechanism is spanned using a wrench, with the axle being rotated three quarters of a turn, just as with a normal wheellock. However, due to the gearwheels’ transmission ratio, the friction wheel does not just perform three-quarters of a rotation when released, but three full rotations. This results in stronger spark generation and significantly reduces the risk of misfiring. This variant can be identified externally by the off-centre position of the spanning axle.
